Our words are powerful. Just as God spoke and the world was created, our words create the world around us, affecting relationships and our environment. As we start this New Year, we seek to understand powerful words in scripture that we are called on to live by to create a more Kingdom-minded world.

The Worlds We Create: Words Create Worlds - Megan Lemmons

“Our words create worlds.” - Pastor Jo Saxton

Genesis 1:1-9
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.

Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image,in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

As those who are created in the image of a creative God -- we ourselves are creative people.

“Clearly, we are not equal partners with God in creation. God created and continues to create in a way that is totally different than anything we can do. God creates out of nothing. We take what God has already created, and we create something using already-existing forms and objects.” - Author Lynn Baab

James 3:2-6
Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body.

Proverbs 11:9
“Evil words destroy one’s friends; wise discernment rescues the godly.”

Proverbs 15: 1
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but hard words stir up anger.”

Proverbs 15:4
“Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”

Proverbs 25:18
“Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.”

Proverbs 18:4
“A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.”

John 1:1-5, 14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,

What kind of world are we creating?

How has God’s word impacted my own life?

How have my own words brought destruction?

How can I begin to use my words to partner with God in his work of restoration?
